| Al Adab |
Linguistically the word Al Adab is derived from the verb a-da-ba meaning 'He invited people to his banquet or he collected them together for the affair. It also means to give a banquet and invite people to it. It is to become characterized as being well disciplined, well educated, well bred, well mannered, polite courteous and refined. It means excellence or elegance of mind, manners, address and speech and good manners of taking or receiving what is given or offered or imparted, or what is to be acquired. It is good qualities and attributes of mind or soul and the doing of generous or honourable actions or the practice of what is praiseworthy both in this world and actions; or the holding, or keeping, to those things which are approved, or deemed good; or the honoring of those who are above oneself, and being gentle, courteous civil, to those who are below oneself; or a faculty which preserves one in whom it exists from what would disgrace him. Is seeking forgiveness (Maghfirah) it is a type of supplication and request, and it is overwhelmingly tied to repentance, and is also commanded. However a man may repent but not supplicate, and he may supplicate but not repent. [Punishment by the Hellfire is Repelled by Ten Causes by Shaykh us Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah] |
| Patience |
The Arabic word Sabr means restriction and detention. In Islam it means to prevent one’s soul from reaching the point of despair and panic, and to refrain from tearing one’s clothes out of grief. It is a classical word mentioned in the Glorious Quran, the Hadith, and the Arab poetry. In the Glorious Quran we read, “And keep yourself content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His face.” 18:28
In a hadith concerning two people, one of whom held a man to be killed by the other, the Prophet (saw) said., “The Killer must be killed and the Sabir, must be put into Sabr.” The meaning is that who detained the man and let the other kill him must suffer the same punishment. (Patience & Gratitude, Ibn Qayyim-Al Jawziyya) |
