Advice From an Older Brother
By: Abu Ammaar Yasir Qadh

As the Prophet (saw) said, “Learning knowledge is obligatory on each and every Muslim”

... not everyone here is going to be a scholar, and nobody expects everyone here to become one. The least everyone should do is learn your religion. Each and every one of you can read a book a month, its not that hard and it only requires you to make some time for it. All you need to do is cut back on some of the things we do. I know all of us have things that we can cut back on. I am not saying stop hanging around friends, or going to movies or whatever it is you do. All I am saying is cut back on some of the things to make time for learning your religion. Our elders came here for whatever reason they came here for, we are growing here, we understand the psychology of Americans but if we don’t have knowledge of religion how are we going to make them understand our religion. How are we going to make da’wah to them and call them to Islam? There is a need for homegrown scholars and fulfilling that need starts with you.

Tawheed

The perfection of Tawheed is found when there remains nothing in the heart except Allaah, the servant is left loving those He loves and What He loves, hating those He hates and what He hates, showing allegiance to those He has allegiance to, showing enmity towards those He shows enmity towards, ordering what He orders and prohibiting what He prohibits. (Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Madaarij 3/485)

Guidance

Guidance comes only from the two inspirations, the Quran and the SUnnah. The Quran is described as the best of all speech. If this is the case, then it must contain in it the best of all matters in all that is needed by mankind. The sunnah, the best guidance, is superior to all other philosophies and methodologies that mankind has invented, for the Sunah is the perfect example of the worship of Allah, manifested in the life and actions of the Prophet (saw). All that is opposed to the Quran and Sunnah – and is this opposition lies the source of all evil – are termed newly invented innovations, destined to the fire of Hell.

Taqwa

The three verses that the Prophet (saw) would recite have one central theme: the importance of Taqwa: The famous student of Ibn Abbaas, Mujaahid ibn Jabr (d.103) defined taqwa as “It is that you obey Allaah, so that He is never disobeyed, and you are conscious of Him, so that He is never forgotten, and that you thank Him, so that He is never disbelieved.” The taqwa of Allah is the life of the heart; without it all actionsa re as if dead.

Islamic Glossary
Zuhd

The Author of Ma'naazil Saa'ir'reen said regarding Zuhd/Abstinence: Zuhd means "completely abstaining" from what one desires. Meaning if the slave (Craves or) desires a thing he withholds, with the exception of things regarding his Lord. Other than this, one should refrain and should remove the urge from his heart and give up craving for this thing.

Worship

The English term worship is defined as the performance of devotional acts in honour of a deity. The root word of ibaadah is Abd meaning slave who is expected to serve her master. Therefore Ibaada according Islam is to worshipping the Creator, means submission and humbling oneself to the Lord of All Created things, Allah (swt). Allah (swt) states“And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)”[al-Dhaariyaat 51:56]

This does not mean that Allah (swt) needs the worship. Allah (swt)  is free of any need. It is man who needs guidance top be on the straight path. And through His infinite mercy, He created man with a natural instinct Fitrah and sent messengers to the past nations and the Prophet (saw), in particularly to the entire nation as the last and final prophet with the revelation of the Holy Quran, a book of Guidance towards the correct path.

Bulugh

The literal meaning is "attaining" or "reaching". In the technical sense it means reaching the age of marriage. The apparent sign for such age is the attainment of puberty. In the absense of such signs the age is eightee for a male and seventeen for a female in the opinion of Abu Hanifa. The age for the presumption of puberty is fifteen for females according to the majority of the jurist

Dayn

The linguistic meaning of the word dayn (debt) in Arabic has to do with submission and humiliation. The connection between the shar’i meaning and the linguistic meaning is clear. The debtor is a prisoner, as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Your companion is being detained by his debt.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 3341; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood.
