Learning to Read in our Summer Program: In our summer program early learners and struggling readers practice reading while having fun. We help them learn to express themselves, pronounce words correctly, use the correct phrases, speak at the appropriate volume at the correct pace and speak smoothly. At the end of the program they come out fluent in English and Arabic to the degree required by the regular homeschooling program during the academic year, they have confidence in their reading ability and they love to read!
The Importance of Reading:
A child weak in reading skills will find it difficult to pursue further education and this weakness will even limit his opportunities when he is looking for work later in life. Reading has changed nations and societies throughout history. So, the first Revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him) was the command to “Read!”
The Prophet himself (peace and blessings upon him) encouraged young people to read the Quran and implement its teachings. Indeed he even commanded one young Companion to learn Hebrew so that he would be able to understand what the Jews wrote. Although the Arabs loved literature, poetry and oration, it was Islam that introduced them to writing, until by the 2nd century of Islam, scholars started writing well-organized books for to be read by the public. So we see that that given opportunity and a little encouragement, young people learning to read can become a first step to knowledge.
In our own immediate context, as children read they learn new words, they get to know the structure and use of the language they are learning and they even learn to write better. Reading also leads to critical thinking. And an independent and autonomous learner needs all these things! Read More... |
